National meeting to drive reform of Libya's local government law

The National Organisation for Governance and Local Development Support held on 13 August 2023 a roundtable with the National Council for Economic and Social Development, one of the partners of the project "Promoting the Development of the Legal Framework for Decentralisation in Libya", at the Council's headquarters in Tripoli. The meeting discussed the Council's vision on developing legislation related to local governance, based on the research studies it has conducted over the past years on the Local Administration Law No. 59 of 2012, its suitability to the Libyan reality, as well as the challenges that hinder its implementation. The dialogue also touched on the Council's proposals and its role as an advisory body to the government in the areas of administrative organisation, local finance, transparency and accountability, community participation, planning and local development. At the end of the session, the two sides agreed that the Council will adopt the recommendations and outputs of the project and work to mobilise the necessary support for them among central government agencies.
